A classroom may support individual work, group activities or shared presentations. Furniture that supports these changes makes it easier to rearrange the space. Start with usage scenarios rather than the number of tables.

Put suitability for users first

HEWI’s approach to educational buildings considers access, ease of use and heavy use together in children’s fittings. This general planning approach also raises a useful classroom question: can users operate the chosen arrangement comfortably and independently?

Draw more than one layout scenario

Before approving a single desk layout, prepare layouts for group and individual work as well. Check how moving tables affects power sockets, storage and circulation. Include accessible circulation from the start.

Furniture dimensions should be assessed for the age group. Review the user profile and suitability documents rather than applying one fixed size to everyone. Establish operating arrangements for adjustable or mobile models too.

Place storage close to the teaching activity

Frequently used materials at the opposite end of the room may create unnecessary movement. Distribute storage according to the needs of each activity. Specialists should assess anchoring and safe use for heavy cabinets and mobile elements.

Tell the surface supplier about paints, adhesives and cleaning products in use. Examine the surface feel and cleaning instructions using a sample. Calm colours and a limited material palette can provide a coherent setting for changing activities.

Before you decide

  • Test at least two usage layouts on the plan.
  • Evaluate dimensions for the user group.
  • Consider storage and surface care alongside activities.

Sources and scope

Manufacturer sources were reviewed on 24 September 2026. Brand and product properties in those sources do not automatically represent performance or certification claims for Mat Kabin products. Planning advice is general information; final selections should be based on the current technical documents for the specific product.
